Introducing La Leyenda Roasters: Craft Coffee Rooted in Sustainability and Eco Tourism
At La Leyenda ECO TOURS, our story has always been about more than tours. It’s about connection to nature, to the local community, and to the land that makes Mahahual such a special place. That same philosophy has now led us to a new chapter: La Leyenda Roasters, Mahahual’s first and only coffee roastery.
With La Leyenda Roasters, we bring the same values that guide our eco snorkeling and marine tours into a different, but equally meaningful craft: artisanal, single-origin coffee from Mexico, freshly roasted right here in Mahahual.
From Eco-Tours to Coffee: A Natural Evolution
Eco tourism is about intentional choices — choosing quality over quantity, sustainability over convenience, and local impact over mass production. Coffee, when done right, follows the exact same principles.
Just as we carefully design our tours to minimize environmental impact while maximizing authentic experiences, La Leyenda Roasters was created to offer coffee that respects origin, farmers, and freshness.
This isn’t a side project or souvenir idea. It’s a continuation of our mission: to support responsible practices about something we love while offering a genuinely local experience.
Single-Origin Coffee from Veracruz, Mexico
All of our coffee is single-origin, sourced exclusively from sustainable farms in Veracruz, Mexico, one of the country’s most respected coffee-growing regions.
Veracruz coffee is known for its:
Balanced body
Smooth, approachable flavor
Natural sweetness
Mild, pleasant acidity
By working only with single-origin beans, we ensure full transparency — no blends, no shortcuts, no anonymous sourcing. Every cup tells a clear story of where it comes from.
Grown at High Altitude: 1300+ Meters Above Sea Level
Quality coffee starts with elevation. The beans we source are grown at altitudes of at least 1,300 meters above sea level, a key factor in developing complex, refined flavors.
At higher elevations:
Coffee cherries mature more slowly
Sugars develop more fully
Beans become denser and more flavorful
This slower growth results in a cup that is smoother, more aromatic, and more expressive — ideal for artisanal roasting.
Sustainably Sourced, Responsibly Produced
Sustainability isn’t a buzzword for us — it’s a responsibility.
We work exclusively with farms that follow responsible and sustainable agricultural practices, focusing on:
Environmental stewardship
Ethical labor conditions
Long-term soil health
Respect for surrounding ecosystems
These values mirror the same standards we apply to our eco tourism operations, from reef protection to small-group tours.
Freshly Roasted in Mahahual
What truly sets La Leyenda Roasters apart is where the coffee is roasted.
Instead of importing pre-roasted beans, we roast locally in Mahahual, in small batches, ensuring:
Maximum freshness
Better flavor control
Minimal waste
A truly local product
This makes La Leyenda Roasters the only coffee roastery in Mahahual, offering something you simply won’t find anywhere else in Costa Maya.
Each bag is roasted with intention, not mass production.
Artisanal Coffee and Eco Tourism: The Same Philosophy
At first glance, eco tours and coffee roasting might seem unrelated. In reality, they are deeply connected.
Both are about:
Craft over scale
Education over exploitation
Experience over consumption
Just as we guide guests through coral reefs with respect and awareness, we roast coffee in a way that honors its origin and journey.
When travelers choose La Leyenda — whether for a snorkeling tour or a bag of coffee — they are supporting a model that values local impact, sustainability, and authenticity.
A Taste of Costa Maya You Can Take Home
Our coffee is packaged in 225-gram resealable bags, as well as 180-gram jute bags if you’re looking for an extra souvenir touch for the coffee aficionado back home. Either way, each one supports local business, responsible sourcing, and sustainable farming.
It’s coffee with a story, not a label.
Looking Ahead
La Leyenda Roasters represents the future of our brand: expanding thoughtfully, staying rooted in our values, and offering products that reflect the same care and respect we bring to our tours.
Whether you’re snorkeling the Mesoamerican Reef or brewing your morning cup, the experience is guided by the same principle:
Respect the origin. Protect what matters. Share it responsibly.
La Leyenda Roasters is Mahahual’s only coffee roastery, roasting single-origin Veracruz coffee from sustainable farms at 1300m+ as part of the La Leyenda eco tourism model.
